Heat exchangers are devices that transfer heat from one destination to another by transferring heat between fluids. Refrigerators and cars use heat exchangers that are relatively basic. Heat is transferred by moving one fluid through a series of parallel tubes while another fluid is pumped through a wider shell containing the tube bundle in a shell and tube heat exchanger. Depending on the system's layout, it will heat or cool any fluid. Waste heat is injected through the larger shell of some processes, which heats the fluid flowing into the smaller tube; this heat may be in the form of steam rather than another liquid.
